This antique red sanders wood Marapachi figure of Bharata from Andhra Pradesh depicts one of the most respected figures from the Ramayana. The younger brother of Lord Rama, Bharata is remembered for his loyalty, humility and unwavering adherence to dharma.

Bharata is best known for refusing to take the throne of Ayodhya during Rama's fourteen-year exile. Instead, he placed Rama's sandals on the throne and ruled as his brother's representative, making him a powerful symbol of devotion, duty and the renunciation of personal power.

Carved from dense red sanders wood, naturally characterised by its deep reddish colour, the figure belongs to the broader Marapachi wooden figure tradition of South India.
