The story of Markandeya is closely associated with the Shaiva tradition. According to Hindu mythology, Markandeya was destined to die at the age of sixteen. As Yama arrived to claim him, the young devotee embraced the Shiva lingam and continued his prayers. When Yama cast his noose around Markandeya, it also fell around the lingam, prompting Shiva to emerge and intervene. The story has endured as a powerful symbol of unwavering devotion and divine grace.

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was among India's most influential painters, known for combining European academic painting techniques with subjects from Indian mythology and literature. His mythological compositions brought familiar stories to a wider audience through realistic figures, expressive faces, detailed textiles and dramatic narrative compositions.
