Antique Deepalakshmi Lamp Pair | Paavai Vilakku | North Karnataka

This remarkable pair of 18th-century(est) Deepalakshmi lamps originates from North Karnataka and features an unusual form rarely encountered in traditional South Indian ritual metalware. Each female figure stands gracefully while holding a deep oil reservoir with substantial walls in her extended hands, combining sculptural form with the functional purpose of a ritual lamp.

The figures are dressed in skirt-like traditional attire and are adorned with jewellery, while finely braided hair extends down the back. A particularly distinctive feature is the absence of depicted feet, an uncommon characteristic that gives this pair its unusual visual identity and makes it an interesting example of regional devotional metalwork.

Deepalakshmi, also known as Paavai Vilakku or Lady Lamp, represents Goddess Lakshmi as the bearer of light and an auspicious presence. Traditional Deepalakshmi lamps were used in domestic worship, temples and ceremonial settings, where the lighting of the lamp formed an important part of devotional practice.
