Shiva Parvati on Nandi Wooden Panel | South Indian Wood Carving

This finely carved wooden panel depicts Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati seated together on Nandi, Shiva’s sacred bull, shown striding forward. The dynamic portrayal of Nandi gives the composition a sense of movement, setting it apart from more commonly seen depictions of the divine couple in a seated or stationary pose.

Shiva and Parvati are represented together in an image associated with divine partnership and the complementary principles of Purusha and Prakriti in Indian philosophical traditions. Nandi, revered as Shiva’s mount and devoted attendant, is an important figure in Shaiva worship and temple iconography.

The panel displays features associated with traditional South Indian wood carving, including stylised proportions, rhythmic contours and the integration of the figures into a unified composition. The aged wood carries a rich patina that highlights the carved surfaces and adds depth to the relief.

Combining devotional imagery with sculptural detail, this wooden panel is suited to a collection of Indian religious artefacts, a home shrine or an interior featuring traditional Indian art. Its depiction of Shiva and Parvati riding a moving Nandi makes it a distinctive example of Shaiva iconography in wood.
