Handcrafted Folk Mask - Anabothanayaka

This wooden mask represents Anabothanayaka, a deity worshipped by the Naikpod tribal community of Telangana. Carved from wood and painted in a deep blue pigment, the mask features stylised facial forms and a structured headgear decorated with painted motifs. The visual language prioritises symbolic clarity over naturalistic detail, consistent with ritual objects intended for performance and ceremonial use.

Among the Naikpod, masks of this type are associated with community rituals, seasonal observances, and performative traditions through which deities, ancestral forces, and protective spirits are invoked. Such masks may be worn or displayed during these events, functioning as mediating objects between the human and the sacred.

The making of these masks follows inherited craft practices, passed down through generations within the community. Carving, painting, and finishing are undertaken with reference to established iconographic conventions rather than individual artistic interpretation. Colour plays an important role in conveying spiritual attributes; deep blue is often used to denote depth, power, and transcendence.

While originally conceived for ritual contexts, the mask can today be understood as a material record of indigenous belief systems and artistic practice in central India. It stands as an example of the living craft traditions of the Naikpod community and their continued relevance in contemporary cultural documentation.
