Krishna Drishta Vintage Chromolithograph | Ravi Udaya FAL Press, Ghatkopar | Original Wooden Frame
This original vintage chromolithograph depicts Krishna Drishta, a devotional representation of Lord Krishna associated with his benevolent and protective gaze. In Hindu devotional tradition, drishta (or drishti) refers to the divine sight or presence of a deity, believed to offer spiritual guidance, protection, and blessings to the devotee. Prints of Krishna Drishta were commonly displayed in homes, temples, and places of business as objects of worship and symbols of auspiciousness.
Published by Ravi Udaya FAL Press, Ghatkopar, this print is an example of the chromolithographs that became widely popular across India during the twentieth century. Regional printing presses played an important role in making religious imagery affordable and accessible, contributing significantly to the country's visual and devotional culture.
The print was produced using the chromolithographic process, in which separate lithographic stones were used to print successive layers of colour. This technique enabled the mass production of richly coloured devotional images while retaining a high level of detail, making chromolithography one of the most important printing methods in the history of Indian commercial art.
Ravi Udaya FAL Press, based in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, was among the commercial presses that published devotional and cultural prints during the twentieth century. Prints from presses such as Ravi Udaya document an important period in Indian printmaking, reflecting both advances in printing technology and the enduring demand for religious imagery in everyday life.
This example is preserved in its original wooden frame, retaining its period presentation. The print and frame display age-related wear and patina consistent with their vintage nature, adding to their authenticity and historical character.
- Preservation & Restoration
We hold a deep appreciation for vintage chromolithographs and undertake careful restoration measures to preserve their historical integrity while extending their lifespan.
- Frame Evaluation
Each vintage frame is carefully examined for structural stability. Wherever possible, the original frame is preserved to maintain authenticity. Replacement is considered only when deterioration is too extensive to safely support the artwork.
- Protective Acrylic Installation
To safeguard fragile vintage prints during handling and shipping, the original glass is replaced with high-quality acrylic. This provides enhanced durability while preserving the visual clarity of the artwork.
- Backboard Conservation
Many early chromolithographs were mounted with metal backings that are susceptible to corrosion over time. To prevent long-term damage caused by moisture and oxidation, deteriorated backings are replaced with archival-quality high-density fiberboard.
Every restoration decision is undertaken with sensitivity to the artwork’s historical character. Our intention is not to over-restore, but to conserve the original charm, age, and visual presence of these rare devotional prints so they may continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
