Vintage Woodcut - The Holy hill of Sonaghur
This 19th-century wood engraving, titled The Holy Hill of Sonaghur, was originally published in Life and Work in India by Robert Stewart. It depicts the Jain temples of Sonaghur, built between the 9th and 10th centuries, known for their striking spires and prominent hilltop location.
Wood engraving is a relief printing technique where images are carved into the surface of a hardwood block. Ink is applied to the raised areas, which are then pressed onto paper to produce the final image. This method allows for fine detail and was commonly used for illustrations in 19th-century publications.
The print comes mounted in a contrasting black frame.
