Vintage Miniature Shiva Mukhakriti

This rare miniature bronze mask depicts Lord Shiva with striking expressiveness — large bulging eyes, a finely twirled moustache, prominent earrings, and a well-defined crown. Once part of a ritual bronze belt used in the Bhuta or Theyyam performance traditions of coastal Karnataka and northern Kerala, this mask was affixed beside a central yali (mythical lion) motif. The Shiva masks, placed symmetrically on either side, symbolized divine guardianship and power. Remarkable for its sculptural detail despite its diminutive scale, the piece exemplifies the technical mastery and spiritual intensity characteristic of South Indian ritual metalwork.
