Vintage Gauri Head | Gauri Mukhakriti | Kolhapur Maharashtra
This vintage Gauri head from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, is a finely crafted brass representation of Goddess Gauri, distinguished by its serene expression and carefully modelled facial features. Her almond-shaped eyes, delicately formed nose, full lips and finely arched eyebrows give the face a calm and composed presence.
A prominent bindi and tilak define the forehead, while the gentle expression reflects the traditional devotional representation of Gauri in Maharashtrian ritual art. The carefully rendered facial features give this compact brass Mukhakriti a strong sense of character.
Gauri, identified with Goddess Parvati, occupies an important place in Maharashtrian devotional traditions. Gauri Mukhakritis and Gauri heads are traditionally associated with Gauri Puja, when representations of the goddess are brought into homes and worshipped as part of the festival rituals around Ganesh Chaturthi.
The aged brass surface and traditional form make this a distinctive example of Maharashtrian devotional metalwork. Its compact scale and expressive face make it particularly suited to collectors of vintage Indian masks, Gauri Mukhakritis, Maharashtrian ritual objects and traditional Indian brasswork.
