Few objects are as closely woven into Indian ritual and everyday life as the oil lamp. Lit during prayers, ceremonies and festivals, lamps have also been part of homes, temples and traditional spaces for generations. Their forms vary enormously across India, from simple utilitarian lamps to elaborate pieces made to be both functional and ceremonial.
Our Vintage Ritual Lamps collection brings together Indian oil lamps and traditional devotional lamps discovered through our travels across the country. We look for pieces that have something to say through their form, material, craftsmanship or regional character.
The collection includes vintage brass lamps, ritual oil lamps, devotional lamps, temple lamps and other traditional Indian lighting objects. Some are modest and beautifully made, while others have elaborate sculptural forms, with birds, deities, animals and other traditional motifs incorporated into their design.
What interests us is not simply how a lamp looks, but where it belongs in the larger tradition of Indian craftsmanship. A lamp from Kerala can have a very different form and character from one found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka or elsewhere in India. The material, proportions, motifs and method of making often reveal something about its origins.
Many of these are objects that were used rather than made for display. Their surfaces may carry the patina of age and traces of handling, reminders that they once had a place in a home, shrine, temple or ceremony.
We curate these vintage Indian ritual lamps for their craftsmanship, character and connection to the traditions in which they were made and used.
