Vintage Vishnu Marapachi Red Sanders Wood Figure | South Indian Golu

This vintage Marapachi wooden figure of Lord Vishnu is carved from red sanders wood in the traditional South Indian manner. Presented against a deep red cloth backing, the figure has a strong visual presence and reflects the restrained, recognisable form associated with traditional Marapachi craftsmanship.

The frontal and composed stance follows the clear, symbolic approach traditionally seen in Marapachi figures. The carving emphasises the essential form and iconographic identity of Vishnu, the preserver within the Hindu trinity, rather than elaborate surface detailing.

Marapachi dolls hold an important place in the Navaratri Golu tradition of South India. Traditionally carved from hardwood and displayed in pairs, these figures are placed among Golu arrangements and have long been associated with domestic ritual, family traditions and objects passed down through generations.

Carved from red sanders wood, this larger-than-usual Marapachi figure combines the devotional character of a Vishnu image with the material and craftsmanship of traditional South Indian wooden sculpture. The 8 × 3 inch figure is presented in a 14 × 9.5 inch frame against deep red cloth, giving the piece a strong presence as both a devotional object and a vintage Indian collectible.
