Vintage Kerala Wooden Spice Box | 5-Compartment Masala Box

This vintage wooden spice box from Kerala is a traditional Indian kitchen storage object designed to organise and store everyday spices and cooking ingredients. Made in a practical square form with a sliding top lid, the box opens to reveal five separate compartments, allowing different spices to be kept together and easily accessed while cooking.

Wooden spice boxes were an important part of traditional Indian kitchens, particularly in regions where a variety of spices formed the foundation of everyday cooking. This Kerala example reflects the practical requirements of domestic kitchen life while also showcasing the straightforward, functional character of traditional wooden craftsmanship.

The box features a sliding lid and an integrated handle, making it convenient to open, close and carry. Its sturdy wooden construction was suited to regular household use, while the compartmentalised interior allowed commonly used spices and ingredients to be organised within a single container.

This example has been repolished, restoring clarity to the natural wood grain while retaining the traditional form and character of the original object. The present finish reflects its restoration and should not be mistaken for an entirely untouched original surface.

Sourced from Kerala, the box is now a distinctive example of vintage South Indian kitchenware and domestic material culture. Its five-compartment construction, traditional form and connection to everyday culinary practices make it an appealing collectible for those interested in vintage Indian kitchen objects, Kerala craftsmanship and vernacular design.
