This handcrafted wooden Kavadi panel features Goddess Saraswati seated on a fully bloomed lotus, playing the veena. Carved in Raintree wood, the composition combines traditional devotional iconography with detailed ornamentation and a distinctive architectural silhouette inspired by South Indian temple design.

Goddess Saraswati is revered as the deity of knowledge, learning, music and the arts. The veena, her principal attribute, represents her association with music and creative expression. Seated on the lotus, she is presented in a graceful, composed form that reflects her place in Hindu devotional traditions, particularly in educational and cultural settings.

The upper section of the panel takes the form of a temple gopuram, with engraved ornamental details framing the central figure. Two carved birds occupy the lower register, surrounded by delicate motifs that bring balance to the composition. The Raintree wood showcases the depth of the carving and the variation in its natural texture. A hook on the reverse allows for wall mounting.

The Kavadi form is associated with the devotional tradition of Lord Murugan, particularly the Thaipusam festival in Tamil Nadu, when devotees carry ceremonial structures as offerings and expressions of devotion. This panel adapts that distinctive silhouette to an image of Goddess Saraswati, bringing together the visual language of South Indian devotional art and traditional wood carving.

Part of The Blue Trunk’s Living Crafts collection, this piece is suited to a study, library, music room, office or home shrine. It also offers a distinctive choice for collectors of Indian devotional art and handcrafted wooden objects.
