Vintage Kartikeya Statuette

This vintage statuette represents Kartikeya—also known as Murugan or Skanda—the radiant god of war and wisdom, deeply venerated in South India. Standing in a graceful yet commanding posture, the deity is accompanied by his vahana, the peacock, depicted just behind him. The peacock, with its elegantly fanned feathers, symbolizes the triumph of spiritual knowledge over pride and desire.

Murugan is portrayed with four arms: the upper right holds a vel (spear), his divine weapon and emblem of piercing wisdom; the upper left holds a vajra or a symbolic object of power; the lower right hand is raised in abhaya mudra, offering protection and fearlessness; while the lower left is extended in varada mudra, bestowing blessings and boons. His form is adorned with intricate ornaments and a traditional headdress, reflecting both youthfulness and divinity.

Such a sculpture would have been cherished in a domestic shrine or devotional setting, honoring Murugan’s role as the guardian of righteousness and remover of inner obstacles.
