Hand-Carved Yali Wooden Sculpture | Tamil Nadu | Contemporary Indian Craft
Our take on the traditional Yali, reimagined as a handcarved wooden figure with the face of a Yali and the body of a bird. The form is intricately worked, with detailed carving across the face, beak, feathers and body.
The Yali is a mythical creature widely found in South Indian temple architecture and traditional decorative art, often associated with strength and protection. This interpretation moves away from the more familiar lion- or horse-bodied Yali, creating a distinctive hybrid form while retaining the character of the traditional motif.
Finished in a rustic gold, the carving brings together a traditional Indian architectural symbol and a more sculptural, contemporary interpretation.
