Antique Tormentil & Cinquefoil Botanical Print | Potentilla | F. Edward Hulme
This antique botanical print depicts Tormentil (Potentilla erecta) and Cinquefoil (Potentilla spp.), wildflowers of the rose family, and is taken from Familiar Wild Flowers, the celebrated natural history publication by Reverend F. Edward Hulme. Dating to the late Victorian or early Edwardian period, this period print is approximately 120–135 years old and represents a fine example of Victorian botanical illustration and colour printing.
Tormentil is recognised by its bright yellow, typically four-petalled flowers and has a long history of use in traditional herbal practices. Cinquefoil, also belonging to the genus Potentilla, is known for its distinctive foliage and yellow flowers and is commonly associated with meadows, grasslands, woodland edges and other open habitats.
The detailed botanical rendering reflects the Victorian interest in documenting native flora, including many of the smaller and less celebrated plants of the British countryside. Familiar Wild Flowers combined botanical observation with carefully executed colour plates, helping make knowledge of wild plants accessible to amateur naturalists, gardeners and collectors.
The print is unframed but professionally mounted, making it ready for display or suitable for framing according to individual preference. Its age, botanical subject and association with an important Victorian natural history publication make it a distinctive addition to collections of antique botanical prints, natural history works and vintage botanical art.
