Kummattikali Female Wooden Mask | Kerala | Nāga Crown
This hand-carved and hand-painted Kummattikali female wooden mask comes from Kerala’s tradition of masked folk performance. The female character is distinguished by almond-shaped eyes, finely arched eyebrows and a Nāga, or serpent, rising above the head to form a distinctive crown.
The serpent motif is an important element of Kerala’s religious and folk visual traditions, often associated with protection, guardianship, fertility and the natural world. Here, the Nāga crown gives the mask a distinctive ceremonial character and connects its design to the wider tradition of serpent imagery found in Kerala.
Kummattikali is a traditional masked dance performed during Onam, particularly in parts of Thrissur and Palakkad. Performers wear carved and painted masks representing a variety of characters drawn from mythology, folklore and local tradition. The masks are central to the performance, transforming the wearer into the character and helping sustain a cultural practice that continues to be observed in Kerala.
The expressive facial features and carefully shaped crown reflect the visual language of Kerala’s folk mask-making traditions. Beyond its performance context, the mask offers an engaging example of Indian ritual and folk art, bringing together regional craftsmanship, mythology and living cultural heritage.
Measuring 10 inches in height, 8 inches in length and 1.5 inches in depth, this Kummattikali mask is suited to collections of Kerala folk art, Indian wooden masks and traditional ritual objects.
