Kummattikali Male Wooden Mask | Kerala Folk Art

This hand-carved and hand-painted Kummattikali male wooden mask represents a male character from Kerala’s traditional Kummattikali folk performance. Finished in deep red, the mask features strongly defined facial features, almond-shaped eyes, pronounced eyebrows and a characteristic flat-topped head. These stylised details give the face the expressive quality associated with Kerala’s traditional performance masks.

Kummattikali is a masked folk performance tradition particularly associated with Onam celebrations in Kerala, including the districts of Thrissur and Palakkad. Performers wear carved wooden masks representing characters drawn from mythology, folklore and local life, accompanied by music, movement and dance.

The masks are central to the performance, transforming the wearer into the character being portrayed. Bold colours, exaggerated features and distinctive forms help the characters remain visually expressive during outdoor performances. The deep red finish and pronounced facial details of this example reflect this characteristic visual language.

Beyond the performance setting, Kummattikali masks are valued as expressions of Kerala’s folk art and woodcarving traditions. They offer a tangible connection to the relationship between craftsmanship, community celebration and a cultural practice that continues to be performed today.

With its distinctive form and vivid finish, this mask can be appreciated as a piece of Kerala folk art, a traditional Indian wooden mask or a cultural collectible connected to the Kummattikali tradition.
