Vintage Mohini Embellished Oleograph | Vishnu's Female Incarnation | Indian Devotional Art
This vintage embellished oleograph depicting Mohini, the female incarnation of Vishnu, presents the divine enchantress seated gracefully on an ornate swing. Richly dressed and adorned with jewelry, Mohini is portrayed in a serene and regal setting that combines devotional imagery with the decorative richness characteristic of early Indian commercial prints.
In Hindu mythology, Mohini is the enchanting female form assumed by Vishnu in several sacred traditions, most famously during the Samudra Manthana, or Churning of the Ocean. In this episode, Mohini appears to the gods and demons holding the nectar of immortality, amrita, and uses her beauty and intelligence to ensure that the nectar reaches the gods. The story has made Mohini an enduring symbol of divine beauty, intelligence and the triumph of righteousness through wisdom rather than force.
The richly decorated swing forms an important part of the composition, complementing Mohini's elaborate attire and jewellery. Swing imagery has a long presence in Indian devotional and courtly visual traditions, often conveying grace, celebration, prosperity and divine presence.
Produced through the oleographic printing process, the image was created through multiple layers of colour to reproduce the appearance of an oil painting. This example has been further enhanced with hand-applied cloth embellishment, adding texture and dimensionality to selected areas of the printed image. Such embellished oleographs are particularly interesting because they combine mechanical printmaking with hand craftsmanship, making individual examples subtly different from one another.
The tradition of embellishing devotional prints with cloth, glitter, paint and other materials became particularly popular in India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These works occupied an important place in domestic interiors and shrines, while also demonstrating how printed images were adapted through local craft practices.
The oleograph is presented in its original vintage wooden frame. As part of its conservation, the original glass has been replaced with protective acrylic, while deteriorated backing material has been replaced where required to provide safer long-term preservation. The restoration has been undertaken with the intention of retaining the artwork's original character, age and visual presence rather than over-restoring it.
Today, embellished Indian oleographs are valued not only as devotional images but also as important examples of the history of Indian printmaking, popular visual culture and hand-finished commercial art. This Mohini is particularly appealing to collectors of vintage Indian prints, devotional art, chromolithographs and early Indian oleographs.
Preservation & Restoration
Frame Evaluation: The original vintage wooden frame has been carefully evaluated and preserved to retain the period presentation of the artwork.
Protective Acrylic: The original glass has been replaced with high-quality acrylic to provide greater protection during handling, display and shipping.
Backboard Conservation: Deteriorated metal backing, where present, has been replaced with archival-quality high-density fiberboard to reduce the risk of corrosion and moisture-related damage.
Every restoration decision is undertaken with sensitivity to the artwork's historical character. The objective is to conserve the original charm, age and visual presence of the print rather than make it appear new.
