Vintage Theyyam / Bhuta Bronze Deity on Horse | Kerala

A rare vintage bronze figure of a Theyyam/Bhuta folk deity mounted on a horse, from Kerala, distinguished by exceptionally fine and elaborate workmanship throughout. The deity, horse, ornaments and decorative elements are all rendered with remarkable attention to detail.

The figure draws from Kerala's tradition of ritual folk deities, particularly the Theyyam culture of North Malabar. Theyyam and Bhuta worship share several characteristics: both involve the ritual embodiment of local deities, spirits and ancestral forces by a performer, elaborate visual forms, music, dance and community participation. While Theyyam is primarily associated with North Kerala, Bhuta worship is more strongly associated with coastal Karnataka, and the traditions share a broader cultural landscape across the southwestern coast.

These traditions developed as ways for communities to honour local protective deities, ancestral spirits and sacred forces, seeking protection, wellbeing, fertility and justice. The deity is not simply represented during the ritual—the performer is traditionally understood to become the deity's physical presence for the duration of the ceremony.
