The Story of Markandeya and Shiva

The story of Markandeya is found in Hindu religious tradition and is particularly associated with devotion to Shiva. According to the legend, the sage Mrikandu and his wife Marudvati were granted a son but were given a choice: a virtuous son with a short life or an ordinary son who would live longer. They chose the virtuous child, Markandeya, whose destined lifespan was only sixteen years.

Markandeya became an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. As his sixteenth birthday approached, Yama came to claim his life. Markandeya embraced the Shiva lingam and continued his prayers. When Yama cast his noose around the young devotee, it fell around the lingam as well.

Shiva then emerged from the lingam and confronted Yama, protecting his devotee and overcoming death itself. The story establishes Markandeya as a powerful symbol of devotion, faith and divine protection, while Shiva's intervention represents the triumph of devotion over even the inevitability of death.

The episode is particularly important within Shaiva tradition, where unwavering devotion to Shiva is presented as a force capable of transcending worldly limitations.

Raja Ravi Varma and Mythological Painting

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) was one of the most influential Indian painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His importance lies partly in his ability to combine European academic painting techniques with subjects drawn from Indian mythology, literature and religious traditions.

Ravi Varma's mythological figures were given human scale, realistic modelling, expressive faces and carefully rendered textiles and ornaments. His compositions transformed stories from Hindu mythology into dramatic visual narratives that could be understood immediately by a broad audience.
