Vintage Changalvattam Brass Lamp
This vintage Changalavattam Vilakku is a rare example of Kerala's rich tradition of ritual metalware and temple lighting. Cast in brass and distinguished by its elongated form, the Changalavattam occupies a unique place among the ceremonial lamps of South India.
Traditionally used in Kerala temples and during auspicious Hindu ceremonies, the Changalavattam is characterised by its long handle, a central oil reservoir, and a wick holder at the front. It also features a small spoon allowing oil to be replenished while the sacred flame remains lit. Historically associated with temple worship and aristocratic households, the lamp was regarded as both a ritual object and a symbol of prestige. In Kerala tradition, it is also known as the Ashtamangalya Vilakku and continues to be used during religious ceremonies, weddings, and housewarming rituals.
The lighting of the lamp symbolises the triumph of knowledge over ignorance and the presence of divine energy within a sacred space. For centuries, brass lamps have formed an essential part of Kerala's religious and cultural life, serving as objects of devotion, craftsmanship, and heritage.
Crafted with exceptional balance and proportion, this vintage example reflects the enduring metalworking traditions for which Kerala is renowned. The natural patina, surface wear, and signs of age contribute to its authenticity and historical character, offering tangible evidence of a life spent in ritual use.
Today, surviving Changalavattam lamps are highly sought after by collectors of Indian antiques, temple artifacts, and traditional brassware. Whether displayed as a heritage object, incorporated into a period interior, or appreciated as an example of South Indian craftsmanship, the Changalavattam Vilakku remains a compelling artifact of Kerala's living cultural traditions.
