Vintage 7-Wick Camphor Aarti Lamp | Brass | Tamil Nadu

This vintage circular camphor aarti lamp from Tamil Nadu is a traditional brass devotional object designed for ritual use during temple and household worship. Featuring seven raised wick holders arranged around its circular form, the lamp was traditionally used for burning camphor during aarti, the ritual offering of light to a deity.

The use of camphor in aarti is closely associated with purification and the offering of light, while the radiance produced during the ritual represents the removal of darkness and the presence of the divine. The seven-wick arrangement creates a distinctive multi-flame display and reflects the importance of light within South Indian devotional practice.

The lamp has a balanced symmetrical form with finely worked detailing characteristic of traditional Tamil Nadu brass craftsmanship. Its circular design and seven raised wick holders give it both functional and sculptural qualities, making it an interesting example of vintage South Indian ritual metalware.

Traditionally used as a devotional lamp, it can also be displayed today as a distinctive vintage Indian object or candle holder. Its ritual function, brass construction and connection to Tamil Nadu's long tradition of devotional metalwork give it cultural as well as decorative value.
