Vintage Hanuman Statuette
This vintage wooden statuette of Lord Hanuman originates from Maharashtra and is executed in polychromed wood, reflecting regional traditions of devotional sculpture and domestic worship imagery. Hanuman is depicted seated in a composed cross-legged posture, with his hands resting on his thighs, conveying stillness and disciplined strength.
The figure displays carefully rendered details, including wide, expressive eyes and a Vaishnava tilak (Vishnu mark) on the forehead, referencing Hanuman’s unwavering devotion to Lord Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu. His mace (gada), a key attribute symbolising power and protection, is placed near his feet, reinforcing his role as a guardian figure in Hindu tradition.
The sculptural composition is further distinguished by the stylised treatment of Hanuman’s tail, which rises and curves behind the figure. Such detailing reflects the visual language of folk and temple-adjacent carving practices in western India.
Objects of this type were commonly kept in household shrines or used as personal devotional icons. Today, this sculpture is valued as an example of vintage Indian religious art, representing the continuity of Hanuman worship and the craftsmanship of traditional wooden icon-making.
