Vintage Ravi Varma Chromolithograph - Saraswati (Large)

This vintage chromolithograph depicts Goddess Saraswati seated gracefully on a stone by a riverbank — a serene and deeply symbolic setting. She holds a palm-leaf manuscript in one hand and an akshamala (rosary) in the other, while a veena rests across her lap. A peacock stands nearby, completing the traditional iconography associated with the goddess of wisdom, music, and learning. Rendered with remarkable clarity and reverence, the artwork reflects a classical interpretation of Saraswati and continues to be housed in its original vintage wooden frame, an integral part of its historical and aesthetic value.

We hold a deep appreciation for vintage chromolithographs and take great care in preserving these fragile pieces of history while extending their lifespan and retaining their authentic charm.

Here are the steps we undertake during the restoration and preservation process:

1. Frame Evaluation

Over time, vintage frames can become fragile, loose, or structurally compromised. Each frame is carefully inspected and tested for stability. Wherever possible, we preserve the original frame, replacing it only when the damage is too extensive to ensure the artwork’s safety.

2. Glass Replacement

Given the delicate nature of vintage prints and the risks associated with shipping, we replace the original glass with high-quality acrylic. This helps protect the artwork from breakage while ensuring safe transportation and long-term preservation.

3. Backboard Replacement

Many vintage prints were originally mounted with metal backings that tend to corrode over time due to exposure to air and moisture. To prevent potential damage to both the print and surrounding surfaces, we often replace deteriorated metal backings with archival-quality high-density fiberboard.

Our intention is always to preserve the soul and original character of these vintage oleographs while presenting them in a carefully restored and revitalized form. Every step is undertaken with sensitivity to the artwork’s historical significance, ensuring that these timeless pieces continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
