Hand-Carved Yali Wooden Mask | Tamil Nadu | South Indian Temple Art

This hand-carved wooden mask depicts a Yali, the powerful mythical creature widely associated with South Indian temple art and sculpture. Traditionally represented with features drawn from powerful animals such as the lion, elephant and horse, the Yali embodies strength, energy and protection.

Yalis appear extensively in the sculptural traditions of South India, particularly in temple architecture and decorative carving. Their dynamic forms and imposing expressions are often associated with power, courage and the ability to ward off negative forces. The motif became especially prominent in the architectural and sculptural traditions of the Nayak period.

The deep red colour and prominently protruding tongue give this Yali mask an especially bold and energetic character. These features are interpreted here through the artisan's own expression of the creature's strength and vitality, rather than as a strictly prescribed iconographic representation.

Handcrafted by artisans in Tamil Nadu from raintree wood, the mask brings a traditional South Indian sculptural motif into a contemporary wall-display format. A hook on the reverse makes it easy to mount and display as part of a collection of Indian art, temple-inspired objects or traditional South Indian woodcraft.
