Chandrasekara - Lord of the Crescent Moon

Chandrasekara - Lord of the Crescent Moon

A finely rendered depiction of Chandrasekhara, a revered manifestation of Shiva deeply venerated across South India. In this elegant composition, the deity is portrayed with four arms—his upper hands bearing a battle axe (parashu) and a gracefully poised deer, symbolic of mastery over the restless mind and the natural world. The lower hands are expressed in abhaya (gesture of reassurance) and vyakhyana (gesture of teaching), embodying both protection and divine wisdom.

The Lord’s matted locks are arranged in a towering jata-mukuta (chignon), from which emerges the sacred river Ganga, cascading through his hair. A crescent moon rests delicately upon the front of the coiffure, a defining attribute of Chandrasekhara, signifying cyclical time and cosmic rhythm. Flowing locks cascade along the back, enhancing the dynamism and spiritual energy of the form.

Adorned with intricately detailed ornaments—including distinctive hand-shaped armlets, layered necklaces, waist belts, and a tightly draped dhoti—the figure reflects both ascetic austerity and regal divinity. The composition achieves a harmonious balance between movement, symbolism, and devotional intensity.
