Kummattikali Female Mask with Naga Crown – Hand-Carved Wooden Ritual Mask | Kerala Folk Art

This Kummattikali female mask is a hand-carved and hand-painted Kerala wooden ritual mask, created in the tradition of Kummattikali, one of Kerala's oldest surviving folk performance traditions. Distinguished by its expressive facial features, the mask portrays a female character with almond-shaped eyes, finely arched eyebrows, and a Nāga (serpent) rising above the head in the form of a crown. The serpent motif is an important element of Kerala's religious and folk iconography, where nāgas are associated with fertility, protection, guardianship, and the natural world.

Kummattikali is a traditional masked dance performed during Onam, particularly in the districts of Thrissur and Palakkad. Accompanied by music and dance, performers wear carved wooden masks representing deities, heroes, demons, animals, and female characters drawn from mythology and local folklore. The masks are central to the performance, transforming the wearer into the character while preserving a centuries-old tradition that continues to be practised in Kerala today.

Traditionally carved from lightweight local wood, Kummattikali masks are painted in bold colours and designed with exaggerated facial features to ensure visibility during outdoor performances. In this example, the Nāga crown forms an integral part of the composition, lending the mask a distinctive ceremonial appearance. Serpent imagery has long held an important place in Kerala's ritual traditions, particularly in connection with sacred groves (sarpa kavu) and the worship of serpent deities, making this motif especially significant within the region's visual culture.

Beyond their role in performance, Kerala wooden masks are recognised as important examples of India's folk and ritual art. They represent the skills of traditional artisans and the enduring relationship between craftsmanship, mythology, and community celebration. Today, Kummattikali masks are valued by collectors for their artistic merit, ethnographic significance, and their connection to Kerala's living cultural heritage.
