Vintage Polychromed Wooden Head of Nandigona Theyyam Tradition, North Kerala

This vintage polychromed wooden head represents Nandigona, a bovine-associated spirit figure within the Theyyam ritual tradition of North Kerala. Carved in wood and painted in strong natural pigments, the head is characterised by curved horns, a protruding tongue, wide kind eyes, and a crescent (half-moon) tilak on the forehead—elements that are central to the visual grammar of Theyyam iconography.

In Theyyam, masks and head elements are not merely representational but are integral ritual components through which the performer embodies a deity or ancestral spirit. Nandigona figures are associated with fertility, guardianship, and the protective forces of the land, drawing from pastoral and Shaiva symbolic layers prevalent in the region. The crescent mark connects the form to Shaiva cosmology, while the expressive facial treatment aligns with Theyyam’s emphasis on heightened presence and immediacy during performance.
