Vintage Reverse Glass Painting - Andal

Please note that due to the delicate nature of the artifact, it is available for delivery in Bombay only.

This vintage reverse glass painting depicts Andal, the only female Alvar saint of the Vaishnava bhakti tradition, represented according to established South Indian iconographic conventions. Andal is shown standing in a frontal posture, holding a fully bloomed lotus in her left hand—an attribute associated with purity, devotion, and her spiritual union with Vishnu.

The composition follows traditional devotional imagery, emphasizing clarity of form and symbolic attributes over narrative complexity. Andal’s attire, ornaments, and stance align with temple and domestic visual traditions in Tamil Nadu, where her worship remains deeply embedded in ritual practice, particularly during the month of Margazhi.

The work is executed using the reverse glass painting technique, in which pigment is applied to the reverse side of a glass panel, requiring the artist to paint details in reverse order. This method, introduced to India through European influence in the 18th and 19th centuries, was widely adopted in South India for devotional subjects due to its luminous surface and durability.

Over time, the painting has acquired subtle signs of age consistent with vintage reverse glass works, contributing to its historical character. Today, it stands as a material record of popular devotional art and the transmission of sacred imagery through hybrid artistic techniques.
