Vintage Steel cut Engraving - Entrance to cave of Elephanta

Entrance to the Cave of Elephanta, a steel-cut engraving from The Oriental Annual, or, Scenes in India (1836) by Rev. Hobart Caunter, published in London by Edward Bull. After drawings by William Daniell, this engraving depicts the monumental approach to Elephanta Island — also known as Gharapuri, meaning the ‘city of caves.’ Located in Mumbai Harbour, east of Mumbai, the island is renowned for its rock-cut temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. A fine example of 19th-century travel illustration, this work reflects the period’s European fascination with India’s antiquities and cultural heritage. The engraving remains in very good condition, mounted on an off-white backing and presented in a contrasting black frame that enhances its historic character.
