This vintage polychromed wooden head represents Nandigona, a bovine-associated spirit figure within the Theyyam ritual tradition of North Kerala. Hand-carved in wood and finished in strong natural pigments, the head is characterised by curved horns, a protruding tongue, wide expressive eyes and a crescent-shaped tilak on the forehead. These distinctive elements form part of the visual language of Theyyam, Kerala's living ritual performance tradition.

Within Theyyam, masks and head elements are integral to the ritual rather than simply representational objects. They form part of the elaborate costume through which the performer embodies a deity, ancestral spirit or protective force. Nandigona is associated with fertility, guardianship and the protective forces of the land, while the crescent mark reflects Shaiva symbolic influences found within the region's ritual traditions.
