Kashmiri Papier-Mâché Bowl | Stemmed Base & Blue Phulai Motifs
This Kashmiri papier-mâché bowl features a gently tapering form, a small stemmed base and a softly undulating rim. Its shape is complemented by hand-painted bunches of blue blossoms that decorate both the inner and outer surfaces.
The bowl is decorated in the traditional Kar-i-Munnaqash style of Kashmir. The clustered floral compositions, known as Phulai, are a distinctive motif in Kashmiri decorative arts. Fine, deliberate brushwork gives each bunch of blossoms definition, reflecting the precision and skill associated with this established craft tradition.
The combination of its sculptural silhouette and detailed floral painting makes this bowl a distinctive decorative object. It can be displayed on a shelf, console or tabletop, and will appeal to collectors of Kashmiri handicrafts, Indian decorative arts and traditional papier-mâché work.
