This large brass statuette of Lord Nataraja depicts Shiva performing the cosmic dance within a ring of flames. A significant image in Indian religious art, Nataraja represents the cycles of creation, preservation and destruction through the dynamic movement of Shiva’s dance.

Shiva is portrayed with four arms, one hand holding the damaru (drum), associated with creation, and another holding agni (flame), representing destruction and transformation. His remaining hands form symbolic mudras, while one foot is raised and the other rests upon Apasmara, the dwarf associated with ignorance. His flowing locks and elaborate headgear enhance the sense of movement captured in the composition.

The surrounding aureole of flames frames the dancing figure, creating a striking interplay of movement, symbolism and sculptural detail. The intricate treatment of the figure, ornaments and flames makes this brass Nataraja a compelling example of traditional Indian sacred sculpture.

Measuring 12 inches in height, this substantial statuette can be displayed as a focal object in a living room, study, library or curated collection of Indian art and religious artefacts. It is suited to collectors of Hindu iconography, brass sculptures and traditional Indian decorative arts.
