Handcarved Indian Woman in Saree with Bag | Wooden Sculpture

This finely hand-carved wooden sculpture from Kerala depicts an Indian woman dressed in a traditional saree, carrying a bag in her right hand while holding the end of her saree with her left. The figure captures an everyday moment with particular attention to posture, movement and the graceful drape of the garment.

The carving is carefully worked across the face, hair, saree folds and body, giving the figure a strong sense of character. The simple subject reflects the tradition of depicting everyday people in Indian craft, with the saree and posture providing much of the sculpture’s visual expression.

The detailed workmanship reflects Kerala’s longstanding tradition of wooden craftsmanship and figurative carving. The treatment of the garment, facial features and flowing form gives the sculpture a distinctly regional character while retaining the appeal of traditional Indian figurative wood art.

Measuring 9 inches in height and 3.5 inches in length, this compact Kerala wooden sculpture can be displayed as a standalone decorative object or alongside other examples of Indian wood carving and traditional craft.
