This vintage wooden statuette of Lord Hanuman from Maharashtra is crafted in polychromed wood and reflects regional traditions of devotional sculpture and domestic worship. Hanuman is depicted seated cross-legged with his hands resting on his thighs, conveying a composed and meditative presence alongside his characteristic strength.

The figure features carefully rendered details, including wide expressive eyes and a Vaishnava tilak on the forehead. The tilak reflects Hanuman's deep devotion to Lord Rama, who is traditionally regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His gada (mace), placed beside his feet, is an important attribute associated with strength, protection and his role as a guardian.

The treatment of Hanuman's tail is particularly distinctive, rising and curving behind the figure in a stylised form. Together with the expressive face, painted surface and compact proportions, these details reflect the visual character of regional folk and devotional wood carving traditions of western India.

Wooden devotional figures such as this were traditionally kept in household shrines and personal worship spaces. The use of polychrome colour, simplified sculptural treatment and strong iconographic details gives the piece a distinctly regional character, while its aged surface preserves the visual evidence of its history and use.

Today, this vintage Hanuman sculpture is an evocative example of Maharashtrian devotional woodwork and Indian religious art, with appeal as both a cultural collectible and a distinctive sculptural object.
