Vintage Nandi Vibhooti Box | Shaivite Ritual Object | Andhra Pradesh

This vintage Nandi vibhooti box from Andhra Pradesh is a distinctive Shaivite ceremonial object, estimated to be over 80 years old. Traditionally associated with the storage and dispensing of vibhooti, or sacred ash, the box combines a practical ritual form with prominent Shaivite imagery.

The box features four sculpted Nandi figures positioned at its four corners, with a small Shiva Lingam represented prominently at the front. Nandi, the sacred bull and vahana of Lord Shiva, is closely associated with devotion and Shaivite worship, while the Lingam reinforces the object's connection to Shiva.

A particularly distinctive feature is the box's small wheels. While their exact purpose is not documented, they may have enabled the box to be moved more easily during communal or ceremonial use. This unusual detail sets it apart from more conventional stationary vibhooti boxes.

Made in wood and bearing the natural signs of age, the piece reflects the material culture of Shaivite devotional practices in South India. Its combination of ritual function, sculptural Nandi figures and unusual wheeled construction makes it an interesting vintage collectible for those interested in Indian religious objects, temple artefacts and traditional South Indian craftsmanship.
