Lakshmi, also known as Shri, is traditionally regarded as the consort of Vishnu and represents not only material wealth but also prosperity, fertility, beauty, well-being, good fortune and abundance. Her imagery has long held an important place in Indian homes and commercial spaces, where representations of the goddess are regarded as auspicious symbols of flourishing and prosperity.

Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) played a pivotal role in shaping the modern visual representation of Hindu deities. His naturalistic figures and mythological compositions reached an enormous audience through colour oleographic printing, transforming his paintings into widely accessible images for domestic and devotional display. This work is an oleographic reproduction rather than an original Ravi Varma painting.

The print bears the association of the Malavli Press, established by Ravi Varma at Malavli near Lonavala before the better-known Ravi Varma Press in Bombay.
