Vintage Brass Betel Box
A beautiful vintage brass betel case sourced from Tamilnadu. The rectangular box is a solid piece with two compartments inside to store accompaniments such as areca nut, slaked lime, gulkand, clove and katha. The design is simplistic yet attractive and is typical of betel boxes in Tamilnadu and Kerala. It is a clean piece with a brownish patina that it has gathered over decades.
The art of serving paan (betel leaves flavoured with accompaniments) has been an integral part of Indian culinary traditions. It has found a mention in ancient Hindu texts as well as been acknowledged for its ayurvedic properties.
