Early 20th Century Gauri Brass Mask | Mukhakriti | Maharashtra
This early 20th century vintage brass Mukhakriti, or devotional mask, represents Goddess Gauri, a revered form of Parvati and consort of Lord Shiva. Sourced from Northern Maharashtra, the mask has a serene and composed expression, a distinctive peaked crown and finely worked jewellery around the neck and ears.
The facial modelling is restrained and elegant, with the calm expression characteristic of traditional Gauri representations. The elaborate crown and jewellery add to the ceremonial character of the piece, while the brass surface has developed a natural patina consistent with its age.
Gauri heads and masks hold an important place in domestic devotional traditions of Maharashtra and Karnataka. During Gauri Puja, celebrated around the time of Ganesh Utsav, Gauri is traditionally worshipped as a form of Parvati and is associated with marital devotion, prosperity and auspiciousness. Gauri heads are often adorned and displayed as part of the annual festivities.
Traditionally, such Gauri representations could be used over many years and passed through families from one generation to the next. They were often refreshed, decorated and dressed before the annual Gauri Puja, making them both devotional objects and part of living domestic traditions.
This example is mounted on a removable wooden base, allowing it to be displayed independently as a sculptural collectible. With its early 20th-century date, Northern Maharashtra provenance and traditional devotional form, it offers an interesting example of the material culture surrounding Gauri worship in western India.
