Vintage Gauri Head | Mid-20th Century | Konkan Maharashtra
This vintage Gauri head from the Konkan region of Maharashtra dates to the mid-20th century and reflects the distinctive devotional traditions associated with Gauri Puja. Traditionally worshipped as a representation of Gauri, another name for Goddess Parvati, Gauri heads are often cherished within Maharashtrian households and passed down through generations.
The head was historically coated with silver, traces of which contribute to its distinctive aged appearance today. Years of oxidation and natural ageing have created a beautiful patina across the surface, giving the piece depth and character.
Particular attention has been given to the detailing of the hair and jewellery, with finely rendered ornaments framing the serene facial features. The craftsmanship and compact form make this an evocative example of traditional Maharashtrian devotional art.
Gauri heads are traditionally worshipped in pairs during Gauri Puja in Maharashtra and parts of Karnataka, celebrated around the time of Ganesh Utsav. They are often dressed and adorned for the annual festivities, with some families retaining and caring for their Gauri heads over many years.
A distinctive vintage Gauri head from the Konkan, this piece brings together devotional tradition, regional craftsmanship and the character of naturally aged metalwork.
