This vintage Kannadi Bimbam from Kerala, dating to the mid-20th century, is a distinctive ritual object in which the mirror itself serves as the sacred image. Rather than representing the goddess through a human or sculptural form, the polished mirror at the centre becomes the focus of divine presence.

The oval metal mirror is enclosed within an ornate prabhavali, or decorative aureole, worked with deep, closely spaced serrated and radiating lines. The pronounced texture of the surrounding metal creates a strong visual rhythm, drawing attention towards the reflective centre. At the apex is a naga, or serpent, while the lower section features representations of the sun and moon.

The naga is an important element within Kerala's religious and artistic traditions and is traditionally associated with protection, fertility, regeneration and spiritual power.
