Vintage Ram Panchayatan Chromolithograph by Raja Ravi Varma | Framed Hindu Devotional Chromolithograph

This vintage chromolithograph from the Raja Ravi Varma Press depicts the revered Ram Panchayatan — a devotional composition featuring Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lord Lakshmana, Bharat, Shatrughna, and the devoted Lord Hanuman. Rendered in the distinctive visual language popularised by the Ravi Varma Press during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the artwork reflects the transition of sacred Indian imagery into accessible domestic devotional art through oleography and chromolithographic printing.

The composition is marked by balanced symmetry, expressive detailing, and richly coloured garments, embodying the refined aesthetic associated with early Indian printmaking traditions. The figures are portrayed with regal serenity and devotional warmth, characteristic of the academic realism and Indian iconography that came to define the Ravi Varma visual tradition.

Housed in its original vintage wooden frame, the artwork retains an important element of its historical and collectible value. The aged frame, surface patina, and period presentation contribute to the authenticity and provenance of the piece, making it not only a devotional image but also an artifact of India’s print heritage.

- Preservation & Restoration

We hold a deep appreciation for vintage chromolithographs and undertake careful restoration measures to preserve their historical integrity while extending their lifespan.

- Frame Evaluation

Each vintage frame is carefully examined for structural stability. Wherever possible, the original frame is preserved to maintain authenticity. Replacement is considered only when deterioration is too extensive to safely support the artwork.

- Protective Acrylic Installation

To safeguard fragile vintage prints during handling and shipping, the original glass is replaced with high-quality acrylic. This provides enhanced durability while preserving the visual clarity of the artwork.

- Backboard Conservation

Many early chromolithographs were mounted with metal backings that are susceptible to corrosion over time. To prevent long-term damage caused by moisture and oxidation, deteriorated backings are replaced with archival-quality high-density fiberboard.

Every restoration decision is undertaken with sensitivity to the artwork’s historical character. Our intention is not to over-restore, but to conserve the original charm, age, and visual presence of these rare devotional prints so they may continue to be appreciated for generations to come.
