Vintage Raja Ravi Varma Nataraja Chromolithograph | Nataraja

This rare vintage Ravi Varma chromolithograph depicts Nataraja, Shiva in his iconic form as the cosmic dancer. Captured in dynamic movement, the image evokes the powerful symbolism of the Nataraja form, traditionally associated with the cosmic cycles of creation, preservation and destruction.

Printed in the early 20th century, the oleograph carries the soft colour tonality and gentle ageing characteristic of an original period print. Its natural signs of age retain the sense of history that comes with having been preserved and lived with over many decades, while the artwork continues to hold the visual presence associated with Ravi Varma's devotional imagery.

The image reflects the wider influence of Raja Ravi Varma's work on Indian devotional print culture. Through chromolithographic and oleographic reproduction, his interpretations of Hindu deities reached audiences across India and became part of the visual vocabulary of homes, personal shrines and devotional spaces.

The artwork remains housed in its original wooden frame, which adds to its period character. The frame shows expected signs of age while remaining sturdy, preserving the way the artwork would have been presented in its earlier life.

Together, the period print, original frame and natural ageing make this a compelling example of early 20th-century Ravi Varma devotional print culture and the enduring visual appeal of Nataraja.
