Vintage Rose Water Ewer | Ganga-Jamuna Metalwork | Uttar Pradesh
This vintage rose water ewer from Uttar Pradesh is distinguished by its elegant proportions and unusual architectural form. A broad, stable base rises into a rounded central water-holding chamber before narrowing into a finely fluted upper section, creating a balanced silhouette with a strong sense of rhythm.
The central body is decorated with delicate Ganga-Jamuna floral work, a traditional Indian metalworking technique in which contrasting metals are combined or inlaid to create intricate decorative patterns. The floral detailing catches the light subtly against the aged surface, adding depth to the otherwise restrained form.
Traditionally used for storing and sprinkling rose water, or gulab jal, such ewers were associated with hospitality, ceremonial occasions and ritual practices. Rose water could be offered to guests as part of traditional hospitality and used during religious and festive gatherings, as well as in aristocratic households.
The surface has developed a soft natural patina over time, enhancing the character of the metalwork and preserving visible signs of age and use. Its distinctive form and Ganga-Jamuna decoration make it an interesting vintage Indian ceremonial object for collectors of traditional metalware, Indian decorative arts and objects connected with historic rituals of hospitality.
