This 19th-century steel engraving offers a detailed view of the ghats of Benares, now Varanasi, one of India’s most important historic and sacred cities. At the centre of the composition stands the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and an important pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The original print was published in Meyer’s Universum, the monumental illustrated series produced in Germany around 1850. Conceived by German publisher and industrialist Joseph Meyer (1796–1856), the series brought detailed views of places from around the world to European audiences through finely executed steel engravings.

The steel-engraving technique allowed for exceptionally precise lines and fine tonal detail, making it particularly suited to architectural and topographical views. This print captures the architecture of Benares alongside the activity and sacred landscape of the Ganges, offering a historical European view of one of India’s most enduring cultural centres.

Mounted against an off-white background and presented in a sleek black frame, the engraving combines historical documentation, printmaking and Indian cultural imagery. Measuring 12 × 9 inches, it is a compelling collectible for those interested in antique Indian prints, Varanasi, historical views of India and 19th-century European printmaking.
